Gusto mo makatipid sa kuryente? Start with the aircon, then the fridge. In Meralco's own lab tests, setting a 1 HP aircon to 25°C instead of 18°C saved about 156 kWh a month. At BILECO's September 2026 rate of ₱18.93 per kWh, that's roughly ₱2,950. A leaky fridge door seal wasted about 42 kWh a month, or about ₱790 at BILECO. Unplugging chargers and switching to LED barely moves a modern bill by comparison.
Below are 12 tips that come with a measured saving, not just a "dapat". For each one we took Meralco Power Lab's tested peso saving, turned it back into kWh using the rate Meralco used, then priced that kWh at BILECO's and LEYECO II's latest rates. Your own appliances will be different, so treat the numbers as a guide to where the big savings are, not a promise.
Last checked 25 October 2026. Rates are the latest month on PRESYO-PH (September 2026). October figures weren't posted yet.
How we worked out the pesos
Meralco publishes its Power Lab test results as pesos saved per month, based on its January–December 2024 average residential rate of ₱12.1817 per kWh (Meralco). Leyte and Biliran rates are higher, so the same saving is worth more here.
- Step 1: Meralco peso saving ÷ ₱12.1817 = kWh saved per month.
- Step 2: kWh saved × your co-op's rate = your peso saving.
- Rates used: BILECO ₱18.93 and LEYECO II ₱14.05 per kWh, residential, September 2026 (PRESYO-PH). Check your own bill for your co-op's latest rate. Our BILECO rate tracker and LEYECO II rate tracker follow them month by month.
Every kWh and peso figure in the table is a Solar Leyte calculation from Meralco's published results. Meralco tested one set of appliances under its own conditions (noted below), so your saving could be smaller or bigger.

Two honest notes before you start. First, tip 1 is huge only if you really run the aircon at 18°C. If you already set 24°C, your saving from going to 25°C is much smaller; Meralco didn't publish a one-degree figure. Second, the savings don't simply add up. A fridge with a fixed seal and a mid setting can't save more than it was using in the first place.
Aircon: where most of the money goes
Meralco says an aircon can be 40% to 50% of a home's consumption (Meralco). That's why five of the 12 tips are about it.
- Set it to 24–25°C. That's also the DOE's advice to households: "Air conditioning units should be set at 24–25°C and no lower" (DOE, 14 May 2026). Meralco adds that a colder setting doesn't cool the room any faster.
- Clean the filter every two weeks. Meralco's newer aircon page says a clean filter can cut energy use by up to 9%, and suggests a professional cleaning every quarter (Meralco). Its two-week cleaning test on inverter units saved ₱86.40 a month at Meralco's rate, about 7.1 kWh, or ₱134 at BILECO (our calculation). The bigger ₱519 figure in the table compares a clean filter with a properly dirty one.
- Keep the room closed and shaded. Close doors and windows, and use curtains or blinds. Meralco says an aircon unit operating in the shade uses about 10% less electricity than one in direct sun, as long as you don't block the airflow (Meralco).
- Match the size to the room. Meralco's chart puts 1.0 HP at 18–22 m² and 1.5 HP at 23–27 m². A wrong-sized unit cost an extra ₱965 a month in its tests (Meralco).
- If you're replacing it, go inverter. Meralco's Power Lab measured 26% to 61% savings with inverter units over conventional ones (Meralco). Its newer page puts the average at ₱4.25 an hour for a 1 HP unit (Meralco). That's about 0.35 kWh an hour, or roughly ₱1,585 a month at BILECO for 8 hours a night (our calculation). Our solar for aircon post compares inverter and non-inverter kWh.
Ref: the appliance that never sleeps
A fridge runs 24 hours a day, so small leaks add up.
- Do the paper test. Close the door on a sheet of paper or a peso bill. If it slides out easily, the seal is loose (Meralco). Replacing a worn gasket is a repair job, so get the right part for your model.
- Middle setting, about 2/3 full. Don't put hot food in; let it cool first. Leave about 2 inches of space around the fridge, and keep it away from the stove and direct sun (Meralco).
- Defrost a manual fridge when the frost is about 1/4 inch thick (Meralco).
- Buying a new one? Compare the yellow DOE label. Meralco says an inverter fridge can save as much as 50% on fridge costs (Meralco). Our appliance kWh post shows how much labelled fridges of the same size differ.
Fans, lights, TV and the kitchen
These matter less, but they're free to fix.
- A fan instead of the aircon in a small room. A 16-inch stand fan on medium uses about 0.048 kWh an hour, roughly ₱0.90 at BILECO, against about 3.8 kWh a night for a 1 HP inverter aircon (figures in our appliance kWh post). If you're shopping for a fan that also runs in a brownout, see our solar electric fan guide.
- LED bulbs. Meralco says LEDs save about 85% against incandescent bulbs and 40% against CFLs (Meralco). If you still have old bulbs, change those first.
- Standby. An old 21-inch TV on standby cost "at least" ₱35 a month in Meralco's test (Meralco). Newer LED TVs are much lower: the median standby rating in the DOE label list is 0.5 W, about ₱7 a month at BILECO (see the TV section of our appliance post). Unplug the old ones.
- Rice cooker. Don't leave it on "keep warm" for hours. Cook closer to mealtime and unplug it after (Meralco).
- Ironing and laundry. Iron in one big batch, and run the washing machine only on full loads (Meralco). Sampay sa araw is free.
Worked example: a Biliran home with one aircon
This is an example, not a forecast. It uses the sample home from our appliance kWh post: a fridge, two fans, a TV, a rice cooker, lights, Wi-Fi and one 1 HP inverter aircon running 8 hours a night. That's 214.47 kWh a month, or about ₱4,060 at BILECO's ₱18.93.
Assumptions (ours): the aircon uses 113 kWh a month (the Midea figure from that post), its filter was dusty, and the family is willing to switch it off two hours earlier and use a fan instead.
Change | kWh saved a month | At BILECO ₱18.93 |
|---|---|---|
Clean the filter (up to 9% of 113 kWh, Meralco) | 10.2 | ₱193 |
Aircon 6 hours instead of 8 (2/8 of 113 kWh) | 28.3 | ₱535 |
Total | 38.4 | ₱727 |

Solar Leyte calculation. The bill would go from about ₱4,060 to about ₱3,333. The fan's own use (about 0.1 kWh for two hours) is small enough to leave out.
That's two habits and no new appliance. The family in this example would save more by not setting the aircon too cold in the first place, but we've assumed they already use 24–25°C.
Three things that don't lower your bill
- "Power saver" plugs. In 2022 the DOE said it "has yet to find an energy-saving device that can satisfy its claim for efficiency" (Rappler). Meralco's Power Lab reported in 2015 that the plug-in devices it tested showed no evidence of savings; their own standby draw could even add to your use (YugaTech).
- Running appliances at night to "save". The DOE asks households to shift washing machines and water heaters out of peak hours to help the grid (DOE). That's worth doing during yellow and red alerts. But PRESYO-PH lists one residential rate per kWh for each co-op, so on a standard residential bill a kWh at 2 pm costs the same as one at 10 pm. Shifting helps the grid, not your bill (unless you have solar; see the last tip).
- Turning the aircon colder to cool faster. It doesn't, says Meralco. It just runs longer.
Two more ways to pay less
- Check if you qualify for a discount. Very low users may get the lifeline rate, and seniors with the meter in their name may get a discount. Our lifeline and senior discount guide explains who qualifies at BILECO and LEYECO.
- Make some of your own power (last, not first). Every kWh from your own panels that you use at home replaces a kWh you'd have bought, worth your full rate: ₱18.93 at BILECO in September 2026 (PRESYO-PH). Exported kWh under net metering are credited at a lower rate, so solar works best sized to daytime use. Do the tips above first, because a smaller bill means a smaller system. Our is solar worth it post runs the payback math, and the net metering guide explains exports.

FAQ
Paano makatipid sa kuryente kung may aircon? Set it at 24–25°C, clean the filter every two weeks, close the room, and run a fan with it. If you can switch it off an hour or two before waking and use a fan, that saves more again. These four come from Meralco tests and DOE advice.
What is the best aircon temperature to save electricity? The DOE says 24–25°C and no lower. Meralco calls 25°C the optimal comfort setting.
Does unplugging appliances really save money? For old TVs and gadgets with big standby draw, a little: Meralco measured "at least" ₱35 a month at its rate for a 21-inch TV. Modern LED TVs use about 0.5 W on standby, so the saving is only a few pesos. Fix the aircon and fridge first.
Is it cheaper to use appliances at night in Leyte or Biliran? Not on a standard residential rate. Your co-op charges the same per kWh all day. Use at night only to help the grid during alerts.
Unsaon pagtipid sa kuryente sa ref? Do the paper test on the door seal, set it to the middle setting, keep it about two-thirds full and away from the stove. A loose seal wasted about 42 kWh a month in Meralco's test.
